The 58 U.S. National Parks are among the most magnificent places in America - pristine wilderness, geologic wonders, awe-inspiring wildlife - places everyone should put on their must-see-before-I-die list. Matt and Karen Smith take you with them on their journey to see them all. Dear Bob and Sue is a heartfelt and hilarious travel diary of their trip, written as a series of emails to their dear friends Bob and Sue back home. They wrote, “If we were 20 or 30 years younger, we would have written this book as a series of text messages.” Matt and Karen introduce you to the parks and share their irreverent humor as if you were riding in the back seat with them. Volume one covers the first 33 national parks they visited North Cascades, Olympic, Mount Rainier, Cuyahoga Valley, Rocky Mountain, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Glacier Bay, Wrangell-St. Elias, Denali, Kenai Fjords, Crater Lake, Redwood, Lassen Volcanic, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Death Valley, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Great Basin, Acadia, Shenandoah, Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns, Big Bend, and Virgin Islands.

I haven't visited many national parks, but the Smith's book certainly makes me want to spend time at all of them. I wouldn't say the book is a page turner, and I did not read it in one sitting, as it got a bit tedious at times. There is a fair bit of repetition in the book, although this isn't really boring, it's just that many of the parks have similar tourism opportunities. The Smiths have a routine for each park they visit, (they call it "taking care of business")and this is mentioned each time they arrive at a new park. I found that I was better able to keep track of what was going on if I took a break from the book every once in a while. The Smiths have a very friendly writing style and the book is nicely written and well edited. They clearly enjoy spending time together, and their sense of humor really comes across. I'm sure "Bob and Sue" are sorry they missed the trip! I look forward to Volume 2.

Dear Bob and Sue Volume One Into the National Parks Volume 1 Matt Smith Karen Smith 9780985358112 Books Reviews
This book is a must read for anyone who has ever wanted to follow a dream and take a risk in life. Walking away from corporate America is a challenge in and of itself but the reward is found in discovering the beauty of nature and experiencing the diversity of our country's national park system. Kudos to Matt and Karen for sharing these often ignored gems that are available to all of us if we just take the time to enjoy them!
Hop in the car and join the Smiths on their personal quest to visit all of our
unique national parks---and you don't even have to pack a bag! Sit back and
enjoy an easy read of their adventures, sharing laughs with them, feeling
their occasional frustrations, accompanying them on hikes through some of the most majestic
scenery in the world, and even feeling like you are sharing PB & J
sandwiches and beer with them. Whether you've been to a national park or
not, you will come away with a fresh perspective and admiration of our
national park system---along with cheers for a loving and devoted couple.
The book is a learning adventure for the reader, too--lots of important tidbits
and facts are scattered throughout these stories. After reading these
fascinating narratives, you'll come away trying to decide which park is
YOUR favorite and which one YOU will next visit.
This book tells the first part of the story of Matt and Karen, a couple with three grown children who decided to quit their jobs to travel to all 58 national parks. They tell a hilarious tale of their journey through the parks, written in a series of letters to their friends. Their dry humor and derisive yet affectionate banter makes them likable and relatable to the reader, and you feel as if you're along for the ride. Beyond the sarcasm and humorous commentary on the American public, however, is a book filled with abundant information about the parks, including historical facts, things to do, and places to see. Overall, this book is a great and quick read for those with even a trivial interest in travel and the national parks. Don't miss it!
Really enjoyed the humor that was shared by both authors. The adventures were exciting and the accomplishment of the undertaking is to be admired.
The next best thing to visiting a National Park is reading the tales of other visitors. Karen and Matt have perfectly combined the true sense of awe found in exploring our magnificent parks and the humorous tales that accompany their journey. Their observations of strangers and their own relationship will entertain readers.
A funny travelogue from a middle-aged couple who chuck their jobs to explore the natural wonders of the parks. This is a great book to read if you are wanting some nice quick overviews of each park--its beauty and its terrors! Matt and Karen obviously did a great deal of research before visiting the parks, but it's clear that the surprises were what made the journey worthwhile.
This is fun to read in the email format, there is so much information about the parks you feel as though where there too.
The dry humor is good too.
Can't wait to read another one.
